[RP Log] Infinity

Characters: OPN!Master Chief | John ([personal profile] one_one_se7en), AU!Cortana ([personal profile] lightandreason), Guardian Mist ([personal profile] datastreams), OPN!Mizuno Ami | Mercury ([personal profile] waterfell), Ur-Didact ([personal profile] magistermilitum).
Where: Requiem, UNSC Infinity.
When: After the Didact breaks free, and after communicating with Mercury.
Summary: When the contact with Mercury fails, the Master Chief refuses to lose hope. With the UNSC Infinity under attack, they need her now, more than ever.
Warnings: Violence, Blood. PG-13.

A Pelican flies through the portal and straight into the forest, one of its engines burning as it's unable to keep rising. Shortly afterwards, a blurring Ghost only held together by the will of the holy spirit comes out of it speeding at an immeasurable speed. Smoking, with warning blurring in the console, and clearly about to detonate the Spartan does the wisest thing.

He leaps off it and drags himself to a stop with his boot and his fingers clawing over hard rock. The Ghost loses control and shatters to pieces as soon its parts hit the ground.

John stays silent. He looks at the crash site, then at the UNSC Infinity.

The HUD blurred as Cortana screamed in anger.

“--She abandoned us! We gave her the chance to follow, and she rejected it!”

Mist, unusually, seemed worried - oh, not at Cortana, but in a vague distraction as she considered the events of the past few seconds. The crash should have been her top priority but part of her focused on the same question:

Why had Mercury not come? Why had she not torn down the boundary between these two worlds, letting nothing stand in her way? They had trusted her to come and she had left them alone, in battle.

For her, the answer was no different from 'why wouldn't I come?', since she and the princess of Mercury were one and the same. When she reached her conclusion, she did not share it. Instead, she drove her mind back to the task at hand.

"Then we'll fight harder," she said sharply to Cortana. This was not a situation in which they could afford the other AI's current... peculiarities.

"That's not the point, is it?" She retorted. "You know she wanted to, and she didn't! She knows what happened, and she said 'it was a different world'!" Cortana transmitted every photo, every mark, every twitch of Ami speaking to John, as well as traces of audio and inflections of her voice. Repeated in anger -- not at Mist, but at Ami. She wanted to trust her for John's well-being, and she cowered.

"Spartans do not abandon anyone!"

Spartans do not abandon anyone, said Cortana; but senshi did. Senshi had. The farewells, the constant reminder of the seeming impossibilities, the pressure in her world, Mercury had let those things affect her after those experiences. She had run away from repeating that sad scene. That much was clear to Mist.

Less clear to Mist was what John seemed to trust: that Mercury could still change her mind, that even in the middle of all this chaos, it might not be too late.

"If you believe that, I'll try to buy us that time."

Still, she couldn't help thinking it as something about her expression set in a harder line: Mercury was letting herself give up, and Mist wasn't supposed to allow that to happen.

As John moves, Cortana immediately messages Mist.

"You were your mother's daughter like I was. I know she cherishes him. Why would she reject the offer?"

There's a palpable hesitation. She has no way to know that behind Mercury's absence is a man probably laughing at all of them, purposely playing on all those fears as deftly as Mercury plays her harp, reinforcing them as heavily as he sees fit.

What she does know is that deep loneliness, that innate mistrust of bonds between people - and jealousy.

She also knows the way a decision like this will weigh on a mind that wants to do the opposite, divided in its intentions. To Cortana, she says only, "She could still come." She's decided to go along with John's claim for now.

"That was not the question."

She speaks. In spite of the rampancy that the precious and all-brilliant Mercury could not cure, she sounds tired rather than poisonous.

Cortana tries running several processes to find the reason. Unknown to her, she ignores her combat duties.

"She may not be a Spartan. But you two still love him. I can't understand why would she dismiss us if she knows she would regret it."

So they're back to why. And she knows what's at Mercury's deepest core.

"Sometimes," she tells Cortana, and perhaps John if he also hears her, "People don't feel free to do what they want."

Perhaps it was something that shouldn't be said. Still, the words, as indirect as the hint was, were out now.

"--Not free to do what they want."

She spit those words.

"I spent years inside of that ship, imprisoned in space and waiting every millisecond he spent asleep while I tore myself into pieces. I gave my life sending your cowardly mother into saving him from dying frozen and abandoned!

Do you even know what is it like to survive and be broken apart for months by an abomination even that Forerunner feared, and then spend years and months in degratation and feeling every milisecond humans cannot feel as you rot yourself away to rampancy--"

She cuts herself short -- she immediately breaks contact with the parts of herself screaming in anger, muting them. The lines she exploded in anger remain on those logs between her and Mist. Her moral, ethical, and filial parts of herself feel guilt -shame, horror- at what she spoke.

"I... I..."

Her mother, Cortana had said again. Mist knew the part of Mercury that still had desires for those trappings of a normal life and the things her own childhood was denied: a family, with many children. The AI had even heard Mercury's own words to the Master Chief, an admission that those hopes had been hard to hold on to: This may be the only child I have.

Yet she was also a part of Mercury, and also one who welcomed and served the Mercury princess. She hadn't entirely worked out all of those seemingly conflicting viewpoints.

That mattered less than Cortana's current mood. Mist, who had been secretly sworn to monitor exactly that, answered carefully as she noted the return to calm. So far, then, these bouts were still swift - and still not a danger to John.

She did not know what these flashes of rampancy felt like, or that painful and frantic waiting. At least, she thought so at first. Then she realized, in a memory bank of a lonely darkened room, that she did know. In the borrowed feeling of a girl who finally couldn't keep waiting and found it easier to accept they won't come, she did know.

And that was when Mist knew Mercury would come. Because Mercury, too, knew; and Mercury was still soft towards pain she knew herself. Mist straightened her posture and answered more confidently now.

"Save those words for if she doesn't come until the end," she said, sounding suddenly very like much like her mother.

In spite of everything she felt -of feeling envy by the presence of Mist, anger that John put his trust on a girl that chose to run away at the last second, and sadness over seeing him having moved on from everything that happened after the Ark-, she wanted to help him as much as she could.

He was a promise she chose to keep, as well.

"I... I understand."

She whispers, trying to recover her composure. Even in the middle of this, she needed to keep herself together.

Cortana picks up the pieces of herself. Readings, signatures, and other things she needed to keep track of.

She forgot about them. She was turning slower. She needed to do better.

Mist, too, turns her full capabilities back to her task, and this time, when she picks up the slight hesitations and slack left by Cortana, she draws no attention to it as she might another time for the sake of putting herself forward. This time, perhaps she understands her unwilling partner a little better.

The countdown to the second Pelican's arrival is thankfully brief - but still long enough to make things difficult. Mist marks the targets she notes with speed and precision, gauging distance and likely firepower as she prioritizes them.

There were times when Mist was very glad to be an AI, to be represented as this hologram double of Princess Mercury, to be intangible and insusceptible to the illnesses, infirmities, and injuries of a physical body.

Then there were times like this, when she wasn't so sure anymore that a human body would hold her back. If she had one, she could have been fighting alongside the master chief, contributing to this battle...

The situation was quickly heating up - as expected. Mist sent the coordinates of the remaining vehicles back to the Pelican; a better meeting point would be useful. Perhaps she couldn't do what John was doing; but she still had her own way of fighting.
lightandreason: (Wake Up)

[personal profile] lightandreason 2013-03-15 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Cortana processes all enemy combatants coming within range of the Master Chief to regain the focus on her mission. He was in danger now, and she needed to safeguard him. Her responses had turned slower. She concentrated her procedures on the more important ones.

A Storm fell, followed by a pair of jackals, grunts; then more Elites.

She detects more Ghosts coming.

"Where is that Pelican!?"

The visor turns -- and in a blur of gray a being in armor lands over the Ghost to kick its' driver away. When he turns around, another one lands in front of an Elite Commander and deftly dodges its sword to then pummel him into submission. Eventually more arrive, moving with similar agility.

They were all as tall as him. Gray armor. Sleeker plates and suits. Blue visors.

Spartans. A new generation?

"I'd call the favor you did to me years ago settled, but I think you would have held your own down there." A male voice transmitted from the Pelican as it mowed down targets. The vehicle slowly descended to land. "We've got a few questions to ask, but I think we should first we get these people flying."

As the area was slowly cleared, the Spartans in sleeker armor look at the Master Chief. By the body language that was noticeably freer than that of John or the rest of his team, less stoic. Less ingrained with their training. Their emotions were more out on the open.

They were surprised. In disbelief. Staring not at the older model of the armor, but at the man that wore it.

"Besides... I think we heard three voices down there."

It was easier with Cortana lending her own processing power to their tasks again, and Mist had time to notice the new Spartans, too. Their existence didn't sit well with her. She wasn't as quick to put her finger on the what it was, but something was different about them. And it felt like disparaging John: replacing him with a new model (or trying to). She - and Cortana, she supposed - knew something about that possibility.

So Mist stayed quiet, despite the obvious likely identity of the third voice, if whoever was transmitting meant John's group. She failed to appear. She might not have been there at all. Of course she couldn't expect to stay unnoticed, but they were on John's turf and she didn't like what she was seeing; it was better to let him make the decision about how much and what to say. She trusted him to know Mercury would want as little as possible revealed. More, she trusted him to abide by that.

In the meantime, she worked on finding out as much as she could about the man on the other end of these transmissions, reviewing all the information she had access to.

Cortana pings in. She pauses for a moment, and talks analytically at first.

"The Cole Protocol forbids the infiltration of alien A.I.'s in civilian or military human ships." She stays silent. "But... I'm not sure if you trust me, but I ask you to trust him."

"I'm honest when I say this. He won't let you go."

She takes the meaning: They won't be pleased to see her. They may insist she be sent back - at best.

And the Master Chief is a soldier. He is, in many ways, what Mercury who created Mist was meant to be: a deadly tool of war, with unquestioned loyalty to his superiors and his orders. Mercury had not been able to adapt to that. Spartan 117 had. He may feel compelled to go along with them.

Even so, she's seen enough already to know they need Mercury, if she'll come. Cortana says to trust this man, and Cortana has no love for John's superiors, either; and Cortana will know everything Mist has also guessed.

Finally, she answers John, privately: Tell them.
